An Education in Saving on Textbooks

Every year students flock to the college bookstore to purchase the various textbooks that they require for their classes. Little do these students realize that, in doing so, they are throwing good money away. As unbelievable as it may seem textbooks, in some cases, actually cost as much, if not more, than tuition.

Distance Learning: Balancing Your Education and Busy Lifestyle

Distance Learning is a priority for most who have already set their lives out in one way or another in that their responsibilities have been laid out, and in quite a few cases, would not allow for regular College schedules. This is taken into consideration when looking for a place to study, and this shouldn't mean below par education. It should mean convenience for those interested in education and furthering their portfolios.

Parents: Take the SAT Challenge!

I keep a box of tissues on the table where I tutor because, as an SAT tutor and college application consultant, I listen to high school juniors and seniors who are so overwhelmed by college pressure that they begin to cry. Not just girls. Not just Ivy League aspirants.

College Bound: The Organized Dorm

I can still remember my shopping list for my first dorm room. Years ago we kept it simple -- the must have storage staple was the old dairy crate and that was pretty much it. Those dairy crates organized everything from sweaters and sweatshirts to books. Today the storage choices are almost unlimited (although the budget may not be...), so outfitting a dorm room or first apartment can be a bit overwhelming. I have asked our summer intern (a college student) to share some organizing challenges she has experienced first hand. We have divided the typical college living space into 5 areas:

Business Plan Competitions

The idea of a business plan competition first started in the 1980's at the initiative of some MBA students from Texas and has increasingly gained popularity. Such events happen yearly and rejoice a great affluence of contestants, which highly increases their competitiveness.

The Challenges College Students Face on Secular Campuses

What is happening on the campuses of secular universities across America? Thousands of Christian students are losing their faith and non-Christian students are becoming entrenched in their unbelief. Why is this happening? Have they discovered that God, in fact, does not really exist, that we live in a careening universe with no divine Pilot at the wheel? Or does something else explain this trend?

How do you find a guide who will give you the best tour and the most reasonable price? What should you consider as you plan this day of exploring? Here is a step by step process for finding a walking tour and hiring a tourist guide on a budget.

Here's the latest list of 10 travel deals. Many of these links lead to offers with a very limited shelf life, so if you're interested, act quickly. But don't act so quickly that you miss the fine print. For deals that aren't quite so fleeting, check out fall travel deals. Few costs are more annoying to budget travelers than airline baggage fees. After all, the privilege of checking a bag (or several bags) was free just a few years ago. Airlines need the new revenue streams created from these fees, and in fact continue to increase them at frequent intervals. If you're fed up, fight back by taking a few minutes to read a step by step approach to avoid baggage fees.

There are certain cities in the world where you are likely to experience a long layover in your air travels. One of the most common of these is the London layover. I experienced a 19-hour stop there in early July.

Most of us don't want to do anything that will risk a missed flight. But if you have at least eight hours between your flights, do you really want to spend that time in a Heathrow or Gatwick terminal when there is so much to see and experience in Central London? Both airports have efficient train connections to the center of the city. Just be sure to allow plenty of time for delays and long security lines.

If you have a minimum of  half a day to spend in London, you won't be making a comprehensive tour. But here is a step by step approach to making the most of your London layover.

On this blog each week, you'll find fairly perishable travel deals that usually are good for only a few days. But there are some travel providers who make offers that are tied to the season and therefore have more staying power. They'll be offering fall discounts to fill empty seats, beds and cabins. Here are some tips for getting around and some fall activities; airfare deals; cruise and all-inclusive resort discounts; and hotel deals. Check back frequently, because the pages will be updated throughout the autumn months.

Whenever I visit a city, I like to find money-saving ways to enjoy whatever is available. In Vienna, the parks and grand boulevards make for some wonderful sightseeing.

The popularity of cycling is increasing worldwide, but Europeans have long enjoyed peddling their way through their cities. It only makes sense that someone there would find an affordable way to enjoy a bike ride.

City Bike Vienna offers 60 locations where you can pay a very modest fee and hop on a bike. In fact, the first hour is free.

There has never been a time when it has been more important to "pack light." Airlines will penalize you as never before if you show up at the airport with lots of heavy luggage. Budget travelers must be light on their feet if they are going to take advantage of cheaper ground transportation. Security searches of your bags will drag on longer if personnel have three pieces rather than one. Find out how to pack light using a step-by-step approach. It takes a little more effort and planning, but lightweight travel can be rewarding.
