Recreation and Sports Information

Barone, Drexel and Harris

My life was always about playing ball, mostly baseball as I grew up. Therefore, I was always at the playground on Chancellor Avenue. This was a hotbed for sports activity in the Weequahic section of Newark, New Jersey in the 1960s. From Monday through Saturday there were countless games taking place. Baseball at Untermann Field and softball on the blacktop. Basketball games, and volley ball games were always being played.

Get your Band out of the Garage and Into a Gig. "Press Kit and Demo"

So you have your garage band and don’t know the next step to start performing for an audience. Maybe you are the parent or friend of a band member and feel the band is ready to play some shows. You may just be sick of all the noise coming from the basement where your son or daughters band practices. Well, its not easy to get out of the starting blocks, but with a little hard work, your band can get moving. When your band finally has some songs together and are playing well, now its time to take the next step. Get the band out of the garage and in to a gig. Of course your band won’t make much money at first, but with a well rehearsed act and some leg work your project can get off the ground running. In the following article I will explain a few tips your band or band manager may need to get your band some gigs or shows.

Monsters and Demons: A Short History of the Horror Film

Going to the movies may not seem like a novel way for little kids to spend an afternoon. But have you ever brought your child to see a Disney flick and ended up viewing trailers for Jeepers Creepers 2 or Freddie vs. Jason When this happened in a Birmingham, Alabama cinema last year, parents became concerned about what the main attraction would be. But before the managers at the cinema could turn off the previews, the main attraction came on, and it wasn’t Piglet. Instead they were presented with the gruesome opening of Wrong Turn, an 18-rated slasher flick in much the same vein as the previews.

The Long Backswing

Is your golf swing too long The majority of inexperienced players I see have too long of a golf swing. So why would so many people have such long swings It all boils down to Human Nature. Human Nature says that the longer you swing the farther you will hit the ball. If this were true, why is it that I can hit a ball 300 yards with a 3/4 swing but I can’t hit it 400 yards with a long swing

Move Your Head

I still remember years ago when I first started to play golf, the tip you heard the most was "keep your head still". My father used to say it to me at least 50 times a round. He thought he was doing me a favor, when really, he should have been telling me to do the exact opposite. He should have been saying "move your head a little on the way back".

Alignment - The Most Important Lesson in Golf

When I watch inexperienced golfers players hit the ball I find that they are usually mis-alinged to their target. Typically, they aim way too far out to the right. The reason they aim to the right is because the inexperienced player has the tendency to hit the ball with their arms which causes the ball to pull to the left. This means that they are compensating for a flaw in their swing by just aiming their body out to the right instead of fixing the actual flaw.

How to Practice

In a normal day of teaching golf I walk back and forth to the range numerous times. On this journey, I usually watch the different variations people have when they swing the golf club. Some of the swings are quite good and others need a lot of work. I usually think to myself that if only they could change the way they practiced they would become so much better so much faster. What do I mean exactly Well ... 99.9% of all golfers I see on the range are just whacking golf balls out there. If this is you, Ive got some bad news ... you will never improve. So what should you be doing If you are working on your swing, you have to work on your swing. This means you should forget about trying to hit every shot perfectly on the range. No pro can do this or even attempts to do this. It is called a practice range because you are there to practice what you have learned so you can take it to the course without having to think about it. If you have just been whacking balls on the range and not improving you should follow the outline below.

The Swing Plane

Throughout the years, the swing plane has always been one of the most difficult things to understand. Hopefully, I can simplify this difficult subject so you can achieve the proper swing plane in your golf swing.

Speed Kills

Would you say you have a fast looking swing or a slow swing If you don’t have a fast swing show this article to a playing partner who does. You would think that a recreational golfer’s fast swing would hit a golf ball a long way wouldn’t you After all, it looks fast! Yet the ball doesn’t go as far as a slow swinging pro’s ball. I wonder why...

Taking It to the Next Level

Here is a quick guide to help you take it to the next level.

2005 - The Year of Patience

2005 has me going into my 15th year teaching golf. From day one, I thought that if I could come up with a technique that was fast and easy to learn I would be a pretty popular guy. Well, I did ... and I am. So what is fast and easy Does it mean that if you take one lesson with me I can get you to shoot 72 Well ... if I could get you to shoot 72 in 1 lesson I would charge $10,000 per lesson and the line up to see me would be down the street. I do get lucky sometimes but for the most part it usually takes me a little longer.

Though it's called a race, the Race Across America is no ordinary cycling competition. Instead, this is an epic challenge for even the most hardy ultra-endurance riders, who press themselves to pedal 3,000 miles from the Pacific to the Atlantic in just over 12 days. Finishing itself is an accomplishment: most years, about half of the participants drop out along the way due to exhaustion or medical issues that come as a result of riding 20 - 22 hours round-the-clock in the mountains, the desert, the heat and the cold and the rain.

Film maker Stephen Auerbach and his crew followed the riders of RAAM day and night over the course of the nearly two-week race to capture just what it is that makes people take on this seeming insanity. The resulting documentary, BICYCLE DREAMS, is terrific and certainly worth watching - for bicycle fans and for anyone who wonders just what it is that makes people attempt the impossible.

Each spring a series of one-day historic bike races help shape the field and define the leaders for the coming season of professional cycling. In rain, on cobblestones, in the mud, in the mountains, with spectators screaming all the way. These are the Spring Classics -- legendary races that have been run in some cases a hundred years or more -- where some of cycling's most memorable performances have been seen. You have the chance to follow them over the next month and a half via lots of streaming over the web - don't miss out.

  • Milan - San Remo, March 20
  • Ghent - Wevelgem, March 28
  • Tour of Flanders, April 4
  • Paris - Roubaix, April 11
  • Amstel Gold Race, April 18
  • Fleche Wallonne, April 21
  • Liège-Bastogne-Liège, April 25

Learn about all the these historic, tradition rich Spring Classic races here.

Additionally, Lance Armstrong will race at least a few of the Spring Classics, according to Team Radioshack manager Johan Bruyneel, including Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, the Amstel Gold Race, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. During most of his career, Armstrong has avoided the brawling classics in order to train or ride in other events more in line with getting ready for July's Tour de France, so it should be fun to watch him in these conditions.

Have you ever heard of silvercog.net? It's a cool site, and a cool concept. At the site, anyone can submit a design for a cycling-themed t-shirt with the basic requirement that it contain the silvercog word or logo in it. Each quarter, a winning design is selected through popular vote, and the designer gets $100 plus a chance to see their artwork put onto a really swell shirt then sold through the silvercog.net online store.

Stefan Downing is the owner of the site, and he's started it less than a year ago to combine three things that maybe seem to flow naturally together.

"I am a t-shirt fan, as well as a bicycling fan," he says. "I have been in the cycling industry for over 10 years and know that there are a fair amount of cyclists that have graphic design skills.  I thought that tying all of the elements together in a contest format would make for a unique place to go."

The current contest closes March 31, so check out the designs here and make your vote if you're interested. The entry that appears on this page was submitted by Kim Giovanni, and is one of about a dozen in the competition.

Philadelphia--the city of brotherly love is also home to the Pedal Co-Op, an innovative business that celebrates both bike culture and environmental awareness to fill a unique niche.

"It's an environmentally friendly hauling service," says founder John MacDuffie "Woody" Woodburn. "We use bikes with trailers attached to haul compost, recyclables, moving stuff, bread, you name it."

The co-op uses a fleet of trailers mounted to 80's and 90's era steel frame mountain bikes to service the recycling and compost needs of their 80-85 clients, which range from small businesses to larger supermarkets. Other serves include package pick-up and delivery and even delivering croissants to coffee shops every morning from a local bakery.

"My favorite part of the Pedal Co-op is riding. Riding around the city, being a part of something awesome," says Jason Rivera, one of the co-op's haulers.

My buddy Harold met this guy on the train. He scores major points for ingenuity with his improvised system for carrying his stuff while riding: clipping the handles of his shopping bag through his chin strap.

This is just one in our collection of funny bike photos. Following that link takes to you a full-sized version of this particular photo, plus lots of other funny ones.

Okay readers, here's your chance to share your opinion and expertise. I received the following email from a guy named Steve who is asking for advice on upgrading his bike:

Recently I have become a huge fan of cycling and I love it. In August I purchased a Raleigh performance hybrid and in September rode a century. Since then I am typically riding 75+ miles per week and already have nearly 1k miles on my bike.

I would like your advice on the best way to upgrade my bike into a road bike, of course without "breaking the bank." I am really considering building up a bike rather than buying a complete bike new. Would you be able to offer insight on a good frame I can build around? I would use some components I have now, and then upgrade as I go along. Does this approach make sense, or should I just sell what I have and start over?

What are your suggestions for Steve? Any thoughts about which way he should go? Share your insight and experience here about building up a bike or buying a complete one new.

If being visible is important to you, check out the Traffic Master Jersey by ElevenGear. Featuring a "retina-searing, listerine-for-the-eyes" color combination, the jersey is ideal for anyone who rides when it is chilly, foggy, dark, in appreciable traffic or any combination of the above.

As a bonus, the jersey carries on the sleeve the portion of the U.S. Universal Vehicle Code which explains that a cyclist is in fact allowed to ride on the right hand side of the road, as well listing the circumstances under which the cyclist is legally entitled to the entire lane, handy for use in discussions with motorists.

I'm always fascinated by people riding with their pets. You'll see a little dog in a front basket, or perhaps a larger one being pulled in a carrier on the back like you'd use for kids. I've seen other people with modified, specially-designed platform trailers that allow their dog to be paraded around around town in regal majesty.

I don't have pets so I don't know anything about riding with animals. Unless you count my kids, har har. But I'm curious about this, because it looks like a lot of fun. Does it take any persuading to get the dog to go for it the first time? How about problems with jumping out?

Please share . . . how you do take your pet(s) along when you ride? Comment below.
